so all the way back in the innocent year of 2019, AO3 did a cool fanworks bingo to celebrate reaching 5 million works. Even though the social media hashtag for the event is long gone and AO3 now has 7 million works, I thought it would be fun to fill out as a reclist.

Fanvid Recs

As someone who doesn't vid/engage in a lot of vidding circles, I don't see a lot of vid reclists. So here's a list of vids I've found particularly enjoyable.

===Atomic Blonde:===
Head Is Not My Home by AurumCalendula (link to AO3 embed)
This is essentially (implied) as a fix-it vid where Delphine lives. There's a sort of thematic manipulation where the canon images of audio and video recording and editing are repurposed to create an unreliable narrator/more ambiguous story. It's a lot of fun.

===GLOW (Netflix series)===
am I only dreaming? by thingswithwings
GLOW has women wrestling and a canon f/f relationship between two women of color (Artie & Yolanda, who dance in this vid and on the show). It's a pretty fun show. This vid doesn't push too far beyond the source material, but it's an enjoyable ship tribute.

===The Handmaiden (2016)===
Bad Guys by ryfkah
The timing is impeccable for this vid, each lyrical beat corresponds perfectly. It does a really good job of showcasing the humorous bits in an otherwise kind of dark film.

===Harry Potter===
Bellatrix Lestrange || Heathens by
amberaimee
I do love a good Bellatrix tribute, since apparently all of my moral scruples disappear when I see Helena Bonham Carter looking kind of sexy.

Bellatrix | Look What You Made Me Do by lushlila
Okay, really good song choice on this one and it mashes up quite well with the scenes chosen.

===The Hunger Games===
the devil within || mockingjay (Katniss, Snow, Coin)
A character-focused vid, drawing visual parallels between Coin and Snow, with the three characters circling around each other. It's a bit ambiguous, but so was the source material, so.

===Sherlock BBC:===
Happy Now? by [personal profile] franzeska (link is AO3 account-locked, there might be a version on Vimeo for anyone without an AO3 account):
This one's a fun little character study for Sally Donovan. Hmm... I don't have quite the right words to describe it but the song and images really hammered in the theme. It left a nice feeling of understanding for the angst-fodder that is her plotline, some tragedy, so on.

===Stargate Atlantis===
a lieutenant colonel is being beaten by thingswithwings
From the little I know about vidding, thingswithwings is kind of a big name, so this rec is likely not news for quite a few people. I've never seen Stargate Atlantis and I still enjoyed it immensely, because I have seen shows with an unreasonable amount of kinky subtext/whump fuel. Of course, the standard warnings about interpreting acts of non-consensual violence as latent masochism apply.

===Star Trek:===
American Idiot by orphan_account
A DS9 vid set to American Idiot. Maybe not the most boundary pushing vid I've ever seen, but it still has quite a bit of appeal on the premise alone.

Bad Guy by AudreyV/Beth of All Trades.
on YouTube, AO3 embed
This is one of my all time favorites. I'm not super into Discovery or Michael/Phillipa but this vid has impeccable timing, darkly comedic bits, character study parallels... it's excellent.

===Marvel:===
after the day's work is done by stardust_rain
A Nick Fury character study. The video editing is lovely and shows quite a few scenes that aren't typically part of vids, but the song really drives the theme home. It's more of a slow moving, luxuriate in it like a slow-melting chocolate pacing than what I typically prefer in vids, but it's good. The vid also has something of a thesis to it about who this somewhat ambiguous secondary (but vital) character is.

===Multi-Fandom:===
Dance Apocalyptic by eruthros and thingswithwings
In many ways, this is the vid that got me hooked as a watcher. Images are spliced from a plethora of sources in the perfect homage to the Janelle Monae song, but also to resilience and happiness in the face of... things that are not happy. There's a tag on the AO3 post, "finding happiness even when the world is terrible." This vid does come with a CW for violence, most of which is probably hovering around the level of The Hunger Games films.

The Glass by thingswithwings
Another vid that will not be a surprise for many. Essentially, this vid works off a quote by fan-studies scholar Henry Jenkins about how slash (f/f and m/m for this vid) is what happens when you take away the glass. The glass refers to both the infamous glass between Kirk and Spock during Spock's temporary death, but also the queer content that will never be canonized due to discrimination and the fantasies we replace it with.
